Abstract
Abstract
The reproductive efficiency of male goats is a critical determinant of overall herd fertility and genetic progress, particularly in breeding programs. Male fertility is closely associated with libido, semen quality, and the ability to mate successfully. These traits are influenced by several physiological, environmental, and nutritional factors. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the use of phytogenic and antioxidant supplements to enhance reproductive performance in livestock species. In this study, twelve male goats aged 8–12 months were selected from the Department of Livestock Management, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Tandojam, and nearby goat farms. The animals were maintained on a routine diet and given water ad libitum. They were randomly divided into three groups (n=4): Group A (control), Group B (Tribulus terrestris at 200 mg/day), and Group C (Vitamin E at 100 mg/day), administered orally for 30 days. Group B exhibited the most significant improvements in reproductive parameters. Courtship behavior was highly enhanced ("+++"), semen volume reached 1.20±0.02 mL, and pH was 6.80±0.12. The semen appeared creamy white, indicating improved density. Wave motion was vigorous ("+++++"), sperm motility peaked at 89.37%, morphology at 92.72%, concentration at 4375 million/mL, and membrane integrity at 90.56%. Group C also showed improvements, though less pronounced. Courtship behavior was moderate ("++"), semen volume rose to 1.10±0.07 mL, and pH was 7.00±0.15. Semen was creamy, with wave motion at "+++", motility at 82.66%, morphology at 69.23%, concentration at 4252 million/mL, and membrane integrity at 78.75%. Group A, the untreated control, consistently showed the lowest values: courtship behavior ("+"), semen volume 0.60±0.01 mL, pH 6.50±0.10, milky appearance, weak wave motion ("++"), 66.99% motility, 58.27% morphology, 4038 million/mL concentration, and 68.48% membrane integrity. These findings confirm that Tribulus terrestris supplementation significantly enhances male reproductive performance in goats.
